The bad news is that “stress happens.” The great news is that peace of mind is simply a matter of rewiring the brain so that life’s daily struggles are no longer encoded as stressful. Oh—is that all? So it would seem.
The fact of the matter is that in the modern world, stress is largely internally generated, and in response to immediate or cumulative demands and changes that are perceived as overwhelming our resources to respond to them adequately. When we feel stressed we are actually being driven by survival instinct. The reptilian brain (the forebrain) is doing its job, giving us signals and resources to run like heck or stand and fight, because our very existence is at stake. This is a good thing and has served the species well in the context of evolution. However, life’s stressors today are rarely a matter of life and death—but our reptilian brain can’t tell the difference between a cougar about to pounce and a co-worker who just challenged your performance.
The bad news is that over time, fear-based mind-sets become grooved into our higher brain functions within the neo-cortex. The good news is that by bringing awareness to our disconnected way of living, we can create new neural pathways to achieve peace of mind.
Peace of mind begins with a change in attitude according to Goewey, and thanks to neuroscience, we now know that the brain continues to change, adapt and grow regardless of age or circumstances. Just as the brain (and our behavior) may be entrained by stress, we can create new mental patterns that transcend stress, immunizing us to outdated reactions and allowing us to reach our highest potential.
